Flea Control
To stop a flea infestation and control fleas on your pet and in you home you have to be aware of all four stages of the life cycle of the flea — egg, larva, pupa, and adult. A variety of environmental conditions including temperature, humidity and even the amount of vibration and carbon dioxide in your home can shrink the flea life cycle to just days or stretch it to a year or more. Flea eggs are tiny and can last unhatched in carpets, bedding or floorboards for several months. The pupae may remain in that pupal coccoon for months just waiting for you to come back to that vacation home on Johnson’s Pond. When you show up and turn on the lights, move around and make a little noice they are stimulated to emerge as biting adults. And they come out HUNGRY! Just got rid of that cat you had for years and until now you never had a flea problem? Well, YOU didn’t but the cat did. And now that she’s gone, YOU’RE next on the menu!
Only the adult fleas (about 10% of the flea population) are on your pet. Flea eggs, larvae and pupae make up 90% of the flea population. Most of them are hidding in the carpeting, bedding, and living areas. Treating fleas on your pet will help your pet temporarily, but the rest of the flea problem needs to be treated to ensure all the fleas in all the stages of their life cycle have been removed.
Vacuuming will help, it picks up eggs, larvae and pupae. Take care to seal and dispose of the vacuum bag, because the flea eggs and pupae will continue to develop in the bag. Wash bedding, clothing and furniture covers especially where you pet sleeps.
We use professional grade materials to control the flea eggs, larvae and pupae that remain. Pets and people should stay out of the house for a few hours until these products have dried.
